We are looking for a full-time permanent Assistant Controller to join our dedicated team of Finance professionals. As the successful candidate, you will report to the Controller, oversee the Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and cash cycles. You will also be responsible for and oversee the financial system administration and contribute to financial reporting & budgeting for both the Calgary Zoological Society and the Calgary Zoo Foundation.

What you will do:

Day to day management

Responsible for AP/AR/cash cycle with supervision of three direct reports (Cash Room Supervisor, Intermediate Accountant and Accounting Technician)
Journal entry preparation and posting
Banking requirements (i.e. wire payments, account transfers)
Problem solving both within the Finance department and across the organization
Business process reviews and revisions
Review and monitor monthly reconciliation of balance sheet accounts

Financial system administration

Administration of the planning system (PowerPlan) for annual budget and quarterly forecasting
Administration of accounting system (Financial Edge) including electronic accounts payable invoice approval system (PaperSave)

Financial Reporting & Budgeting

Contribute to monthly management reporting, analyzing trends and results vs. budget and forecasts
Assist in the quarterly financial reporting for the Board of Directors
Contribute to the preparation and coordination of the annual audited financial statements and notes
Lead completion of the annual Charity Information Return (T3010) for the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
Assist in the coordination, preparation, review and analysis of annual budgets and quarterly forecasting
Review and ensure compliance with monthly GST reporting and filing
Liaise with external auditors to ensure successful financial audits
Research appropriate treatment of new or unusual transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, as required
Other government reporting requirements, as required

Other

Oversees Finance department in absence of Controller
To be considered as succession plan to Controller position
Develop, implement and monitor appropriate internal controls
Other duties as assigned

What you will bring:

Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or a similar discipline
7 to 10 years in experience in an accounting environment, including preparation of financial statements
Minimum 3 years supervisory experience
Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) Designation
Familiarity with computerized Accounting Systems – specifically the General Ledger, AP, and AR modules
Experience liaising with external auditors
Experience in restricted fund and not-for-profit accounting and reporting
Experience in word processing, spreadsheet applications, and databases
Well developed personal and communication skills

Working Conditions:

This is a largely sedentary position that requires considerable keyboard work, some telephone work, and occasional on-grounds mobility
